About the Art of the Asana Workshops

These special afternoon workshops are co-taught with renowned Iyengar teacher Karin Stephan. We focus on a specific theme chosen to rigorously explore specific aspects of the poses and alignment. Originally developed for yoga teachers, The Art of Asana is now designed for serious students who are not teachers as well as active teachers and advanced students considering teaching.

Students have found these workshops to be a wonderful way to increase their understanding of the poses and deepen their yoga practice. A warm sense of camraderie and fellowship develops during these afternoon-long sessions. Learning in a small group setting, participants enjoy an opportunity to get to know each other during challenging and supportive activities. Workshop followed by casual discussion over tea and cookies.

$85 per session; $160 for two.

The Art of the Asana:
Going Forward in your Forward Bends

In this workshop we will examine what inhibits the natural forward flow in our forward bends. Poses, as well as preparation for poses, will be looked at from a number of different angles. We will also study how various types of assymmetries in our backs and hips get in the way of our ability to do our forward bends in a balanced and aligned way.

Sunday, June 7, 1 to 4:30 pm
The Art of the Asana:
Backbends – The Elixir of Life!

Why do people who practice backbends feel so vital and alive afterwards? What is it about these poses which give us both a heightened sense of awareness in our minds and an increased sense of exuberance in our bodies? In this workshop we will explore how backbends and backbend variations naturally stimulate and massage our neuromuscular and internal organs systems and how this additional flow of energy -- created by focused types of actions in the poses -- nourishes and enhances our overall sense of well being.

Does your home practice need some...inspiration?

Saturday, January 11, 2 to 5 @ The Arlington Center
Growing Your Home Practice

Are you enjoying taking regular yoga classes? Do you feel much better now that you are doing yoga 2 or more times a week? And now…are you wondering how to bring your yoga practice home but finding it hard to remember what you did in class?

Or maybe you have a home practice but find it difficult to keep in fresh and interesting?

Building a personal yoga practice can be a wonderful, liberating experience. However, before most of us get to that point, we've got to deal with obstacles: feeling like we don't know what to do, or can't correct our alignment issues on our own. It may be hard to find the "right" space or the "right" time to practice. Or we may be stuck in a routine that keeps us from exploring new ideas and inspiration.

Every student has different needs in creating a home practice. This workshop is designed to help you create a sustained practice at home that will help you feel better, increase your strength and flexibility and integrate with the practice you do in class.

Cost: $35. Space will be limited! Please send me an email (yogawithinboston @ gmail.com) confirming your participation early! The Arlington Center requires a completed Registration Form. Please download the form, fill out, and either mail directly to the Arlington Center or bring it with you along with payment (by check or cash only -- the Center does not take credit cards).

Directions to The Arlington Center, 269 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA

Workshop: Free the Neck!

Saturday, January 25, 1 to 4 @ Yoga Mandala, Winchester
Open and Strengthen Your Shoulders – Release Your Neck!

In this workshop we will focus on both strengthening and opening the shoulders to allow for release of the neck.  Many of us habitually carry tension in our shoulders and neck and this can tie into jaw tension above and mid- and lower back tension below.  This workshop is designed to explore how to harness and build strength in the shoulders and upper arms while simultaneously training our neck muscles to relax. In addition we will be working to stretch the muscles surrounding the shoulder joints, while paying careful attention to alignment, so that we can facilitate release of tension from the jaw down to the pelvis.

Cost: $45 (at the door or in advance)

Directions to Yoga Mandala, 750 Main Street, 2nd Floor, Winchester.

Fall Workshops: Twist!

Twists!

We will be focusing on twists and ways to find length and suppleness in the spine that will feed into twists to make them more even, smoother and deeper without forcing the body or overworking. Balanced twisting is a wonderful way to align the body and access muscles and connective tissue that can be hard to feel and find in other types of poses.

Backbends!

Do you find backbends intimidating? Do you worry that they might be too intense for you? Are you just not sure you want to do a 3 hours of backbends?…. On the other hand, do you have upper back tightness? Neck pain and stiffness? Do you work at a computer, drive, chop veggies? Feel sluggish and want to find a way to invigorate yourself without caffeine? If you said yes to any of the above then this backbending workshop may be for you! We will be preparing for backbends by opening up the hips, especially the hip flexors, and stretching the quadriceps as well as warming up the shoulders and upper back. All of the stretches and poses we will do in this workshop will directly or indirectly prepare your body for backbends. Eventually we will, in fact, have the option to do some backbends, as well as modified and gentler versions for those for whom the more mellow route is best.

Cost: $35. Space will be limited! Please send me an email (yogawithinboston @ gmail.com) confirming your participation. The Arlington Center requires a completed Registration Form. Please download the form, fill out, and either mail directly to the Arlington Center or bring it with you along with payment (by check or cash only -- the Center does not take credit cards).

The Psoas and the Upper Back
a Pas de Deux and The Iyengar Way

In this workshop we will focus on the complex relationship between the upper back and the Psoas. We will be using Iyengar methods to address tightness in both the upper back and shoulders as well as the hips and thighs.  Working with the interconnectedness of the upper back with the hips and thigh muscles we will examine ways to release tension in the hips and legs that can be used as a foundation for gentle and therapeutic opening of the upper back and shoulders.

The Art of the Backbend

We will weave ideas presented in the September workshop into a full-blown back bending practice. We will begin by warming up the large muscle groups needed to lift you into backbends and hold you there. We will then use Iyengar alignment strategies to stretch and prepare key areas of the body to allow for full expression of your back bends, including the upper thoracic spine, psoas, quadriceps and shoulders. You will be amazed at how easy your backbends will seem!

Open and Strengthen Your Shoulders, Release Your Neck

In this workshops we will focus on both strengthening and opening the shoulders to allow for release of the neck. Many of us habitually carry tension in our shoulders and neck. This neck tension can – and often does – tie into jaw tension above and mid- and low-back tension below. This workshop is designed to explore how to harness and build strength in the shoulders and upper arms while simultaneously training our neck muscles to relax. In addition, we will be working to stretch the muscles surrounding the shoulder joints, while paying careful attention to alignment so that we can facilitate release of tension from the jaw down to the pelvis.
